Iowa Ends Season In GRLC Semifinals

Iowa kicked off the GRLC Tournament on Friday in what is likely the program’s first ever five overtime game against Illinois State.  Tied up at nine goals each, freshman Frank Recchia scored the game winner in the fifth extra period to give the Hawkeyes a 10-9 victory over the Redbirds in the quarterfinals.  Recchia had three goals on the day, while fellow freshman Austin Patrick added three goals and two assists.

With the win, the Hawks took on No. 1 seed Indiana in the semifinals on Saturday where Iowa fell 16-8.  Senior Jay Morgan had two goals and three assists, while senior Jordan Kane recorded 10 saves.  Iowa ended its 2013 season with a final record of 8-7 and made an appearance in the GRLC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season, a first in program history.

Iowa’s current players, alumni and fans would like to thank seniors Jay Morgan and Jordan Kane on a great career at Iowa.

Team awards and possible all-conference selections should hopefully be announced in the near future.

Iowa Finishes Regular Season

Iowa finished its regular season this past weekend by going 1-1 in two games in Madison, Wisconsin.  Iowa opened up the weekend with a 15-2 loss to Wisconsin on Friday which determined the GRLC West Division title.  With the loss, Iowa finished second in the West Division and will face East Division No. 3 seed Illinois State in the GRLC Tournament quarterfinals.

On Saturday in a preview of next weekend’s quarterfinals, the Hawkeyes defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 12-7.  Iowa was led by the four goals and two assists of freshman Frank Recchia, while senior Jordan Kane made 23 saves between the pipes.

Iowa finishes the regular season with a 7-6 overall record, while going 4-1 in GRLC play.  As mentioned above, the Hawkeyes will face Illinois State in the quarterfinals of the GRLC Tournament on Friday, May 3 at 3:00 PM at St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri.  If they win, they will play East Division No. 1 seed Indiana in the semifinals on Saturday at 5:00 PM at Belleville Stadium in Belleville, Illinois.  Here is a full bracket of the GRLC Tournament.

Undefeated In April

After heading into Spring Break with three losses in Indianapolis, Iowa returned to the field in Ames, Iowa on April 6 for two games.  The Hawkeyes first beat in-state rivals Iowa State, 12-11, behind the three goals of John Koenig, while Jeff Formeller and Cooper Perry each tallied two goals.  It was Iowa’s fourth consecutive victory over the Cyclones.  In the afternoon, the Hawkeyes defeated University of Dubuque in a scrimmage.

On Saturday April 13, the Hawks headed to Lincoln, Nebraska where it beat the Cornhuskers, 13-8.  Five different players scored at least two goals, while Jordan Kane made 15 saves.  It was also Iowa’s fourth consecutive victory over Nebraska.

This past weekend, Iowa hosted Missouri and defeated the Tigers 17-7.  Senior Jay Morgan scored five goals, while freshman Jeffrey Richert added three goals and two assists.  The Hawkeyes have now won two in a row over Missouri.  With the win, Iowa is now 6-5 on the season with a 4-0 record in GRLC play.

The Hawkeyes have two remaining regular-season games left on the schedule.  Iowa heads to Madison, Wisconsin this weekend to take on Wisconsin (Friday) and Illinois State (Saturday).  If the Hawks can beat Wisconsin, they will have clinched the GRLC West Division title and will receive a first-round bye in the GRLC Tournament.

Also of note, junior Jeff Formeller is attempting to run the Chicago Marathon for Dance Marathon, one of the main philanthropic organizations on Iowa’s campus.  In order to secure a spot to run for the organization, it is required that each participant raise $200 of the $400 required dollars.  If you are interested in helping Formeller’s cause, click here for more information.
